The European Union will implement the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) from early 2024, instituting a new travel visa for tourists from the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, as per its July announcement.

To secure this visa, travelers will need to complete an online form, supplying personal information, intended travel details, past travel history, and responses to security queries. The approval, for most applications, is expected within an hour, but some may experience a wait time of up to 96 hours.

The application comes at a cost of €7 (around $8), applicable to all age groups, and once approved, the authorization remains valid for multiple entries over a period of three years, or until the passport expiration date.

Despite the potential for initial unease due to this new requirement, the straightforward application process is expected to allay any apprehension. Moreover, as the digital world advances, travelers are becoming more accustomed to pre-travel processes like these.

The ETIAS authorization will be compulsory for travel to all participating countries, spanning full Schengen members, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries, future Schengen members, and European micro-states. The chief objective behind ETIAS is to enhance border security and digitally monitor travelers entering and exiting EU countries.

The existing 90-day duration for [U.S.](https://www.wherenext.to/destinations/north-america/united-states-of-america), [Canadian](https://www.wherenext.to/destinations/north-america/canada), [Australian](https://www.wherenext.to/destinations/oceania/australia), and [New Zealand](https://www.wherenext.to/destinations/oceania/new-zealand) passport holders to stay in [Europe](https://www.wherenext.to/destinations/europe) as tourists will continue to be in effect, with longer stays necessitating a special visa.

The precise rollout date for the ETIAS is yet to be confirmed. It is anticipated that the initial introduction may bring about some confusion, but as travellers have shown resilience in adjusting to new systems and procedures, especially during the recent pandemic, the transition is expected to be smooth eventually.
