Overview

During this program, you will teach different subjects including English and have one on one English conversation classes with the monks at the monasteries. You will also get a chance to learn about Buddhism while doing this. You will be teaching novice monks, both adults and children!

The monasteries we work with are located in different areas in Kathmandu, Pharping, Nala and Everest region. In the Everest regions, we work with Serlo Taksindo, Mendo Pakhe and Choying monasteries. During your program, you will be accommodated in the monastery itself where you will do the program. You will be sharing a room with other participants. The nearest monastery to our Kathmandu Center is Tinchuli (Near the Bauddhinath Stupa) which is about 30 minutes drive from our centre in Kathmandu. Monasteries in Nala and Pharping are about 2 hours drive from Kathmandu.

In the Everest regions, we work with Serlo Taksindo, Mendo Pakhe and Choying monasteries. Reaching these regions can take about 12 hours in a jeep and an overnight staying Phaplu. Then the next day, you will do a hike of about 30min to 4 hours to reach the Monastery.

Please note that transfers between Kathmandu and monasteries are not included in the program fee.

Objectives

  • To help teach monks English and also, to get our participants immersed into the lifestyle in a monastery and to learn about Buddhism

Impact

Volunteer experiences have a direct and positive impact on local communities by injecting money into the local economy through the purchase of food, transportation, and tourism activities. Volunteering is a great way to give back to the comunity and make a difference in the world. Depending on the type of volunteer experience you are interested in, your time can be spent improving educational resources and opportunities, providing medical services to underserved communities, or promoting environmental conservation and sustainable farming techniques.

Various, Nepal

Your new home will be an authentic Buddhist monastery. According to availability you can choose between different monasteries in or around Kathmandu. While the nearest one is just within Kathmandu, the farthest takes a 12 hour (overnight) bus ride and 4 hours of hiking to get to. Did we already say it’s authentic?

We take care of the (public) transport to the monastery and back at the beginning and end of your program.
