    Overview

    In this exciting program, participants will be involved in important work to maintain and preserve Madagascar’s wildlife heritage, by working with a private lemur species rehabilitation centre. As a conservation participant, you will first learn about Madagascar’s flagship species especially the ones which are endemic to this part of Madagascar, with other representatives of unique fauna like the Madagascar fish-eagle and Ploughshare tortoise.

    You will be involved in preparing food according to the diet chart, preparing the food involves chopping vegetables and fruits for the lemurs’ in the morning and assisting the local staff and vet with the health checks which takes place once a month. You will also have the opportunity to assist the local staff in caring for other species such as tortoises, chameleons, and other species residing in the park.

    During the afternoon, you will be involved in mangrove conservation activities wherein your presence will be required along with our coordinators to plant mangrove saplings, prepare saplings at the plant nursery, nurture the saplings, and clean the mangrove area from pollutant materials.

    Objectives

    • You will be taking part in the conservation efforts of this beautiful docile creature and in various conservation activities which we have put in place.

    Location

    Nosy Be, Madagascar

    Nosy is an island off the northwest coast of Madagascar. Nosy Be is Madagascar's largest and busiest tourist destination. It has an area of 320.02 square kilometers and its population was estimated at 73,010. Nosy Be means "big island" in the Malagasy language. The island was called Assada during the early colonial era of the 17th century.

    Here you’ll find volcanic lakes, lemurs, rum distilleries, Ylang Ylang plantations and breathtaking coral reefs that are practically begging to be explored. In May, come to experience the four-day Donia Music Festival. Perfectly located on the Indian Ocean between Africa and Asia, Nosy-Be evokes feelings of discovery and adventure, the rich and endemic biodiversity will have begging for more. There are many spots that are perfect for ones who seek a golden opportunity to swim among turtles, stingrays or manta rays.

      Sunday - Arrival

      Arrive at Fascene Airport (NOS) in our pickup window on Sunday between 08:00 and 20:00

      Monday - Friday

      On Monday, after breakfast, you will visit Lemuria Land Park and meet the local staff.

      Throughout the week, at 7:00 am, we will travel to the lemur park and your work will start at about 8:30 am.

      You will begin with cleaning the enclosures, there will be a 15-minute short break followed by collecting fruits, vegetables, and green leaves for the lemurs.

      You will also get to prepare their feed and feed them. Your daily work at the park ends at 12 noon. Then you will return to the centre for lunch. After lunch, you will proceed with our coordinator to the mangrove conservation area to take part in the daily conservation activities at the plant nursery and as well as at the mangrove forest.

      Daily activities will be planned by our coordinator on site as per the requirements and needs.

    • Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for all participants arriving in Madagascar.

    Food

    The meals are a mix of Western and Malagasy food, consisting mainly of vegetarian dishes including rice and vegetables. You can expect to have a chicken dish about twice a week. You can also use the kitchen facilities to cook for yourself or eat out at any of the local restaurants at your own expense.

    Accommodation

    In our center, there is a dining room, a lounge area where you can hang out with fellow participants and a beautiful garden to relax. A balcony and large roof terrace is also available for you to spend some quality time.

    Furthermore, there is a refrigerator which you are welcome to use to store food and beverages.

    Cancellation Policy

    Bookings can be amended and cancelled 30 days before the program start date without any costs. Bookings that are cancelled less than 30 days before the program start date will be charged the first week of the booking.
